» Combo TV/PC gadget runs SUSE Linux on P4

Hong Kong based systems integrator Quataris has updated its all-in-one Pentium 4 based analog TV/PC design. The new Ottimo model, which features an innovative mechanical design, supports processors up to 2.8GHz, comes with 15-, 17-, or 19-inch screens, and is available pre-installed with SUSE Linux. Quataris shipped a similar design in April, the QuaNext PC . That device featured a more traditional LCD TV form factor.

The new Ottimo features an interesting design with a combined kickstand and carrying handle. A large button on the front panel switches the device from TV to computer.

The Ottimo can be "customized on order," Quataris says. However, base specs include:

Intel 945GZ chipset

256MB DDR II RAM, clocked at 533MHz, upgradable to 2GB

80GB ATA hard drive

Various optical drive options

Display:

  LCD panel size up to 19-inches
  Built-in GMA950 graphics
  Up to 128MB of shared graphics memory
  16:10 aspect ratio (widescreen)
  1440 x 900 @ 60Hz video output
  Claimed viewing angles of 170 degrees horizontal, and 140 vertical
  16.2 million colors


Realtek AC97 audio and 10/100/1000 LAN chips

6 x USB 2.0, plus audio I/O, s-video, and other ports

NTSC/PAL/SECAM tuner

Runs Linux or Microsoft OSes; available preinstalled with SUSE Linux

18.3 x 16.6 x 3.1 inches (19-inch display model)

Availability
The Ottimo design appears to be ready to manufacture, with prices starting at 1,000 Euros.
